The Lifeline Between Donors and Patients

We’re the Essex Voluntary Blood Service, or simply Essex Bloodrunners, a small volunteer organisation recognised by HMRC that provide urgent, life-saving medical courier services to the 'NHS' and our 'Essex & Herts Air Ambulance'. We’re proud to be part of a national network of 30 volunteer blood bike groups operating across the UK.
From the NHS Blood Bank in Basildon, our team of unpaid volunteers deliver blood and medical supplies to hospitals across Essex and East London, We transport samples for analysis to NHS labs in North London, and supply blood to Essex & Herts Air Ambulance at Earls Colne and North Weald, every single night.
We also take on specialist tasks like delivering 'donor breast milk' to the Hearts Milk Bank and Addenbrooke’s Hospital, ensuring the most vulnerable patients get the care they need.
We’re growing – and we need more volunteers.
Some of the commonly asked questions:
*When Do We Operate?
That's an easy one, we operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
*What are the shifts?
Shifts are either day shift or night shift. You can choose your own shifts in advance to fit around your life. Ideally we like volunteers to complete a minimum of 3 shifts a month.
*Who we’re Looking For?
If you’re reliable, responsible, and have access to your own motorcycle, car, or van, held a full driving licence for more than two years, along with a mobile phone, we’d love to hear from you.
Whether you’re working, retired, or somewhere in between, you’ll receive:
* Full training and guidance
* All necessary documentation
* A hi vis volunteer jacket
* Ongoing support from our team
You’ll usually work solo on a delivery run, with round trips ranging from 40 to over 120 miles. You’ll be the friendly, professional face of Essex Bloodrunners, representing us to NHS staff and the public.
*What’s in It for You?
Let’s be honest – the work isn’t glamorous. It can mean long drives in bad weather, odd hours, and you’ll cover your own fuel and running costs. It’s not for everyone.
But what it is, is genuinely life-saving.
Like giving blood or learning first aid, volunteering with Essex Bloodrunners is one of the rare ways an everyday person can directly help save a life.
So while most people reading this might think:
"Sounds great – but not for me”...just one of you might think:
“Actually, I could do that.”

We Are Proud To Support
Essex & Herts Air Ambulance
Essex & Herts Air Ambulance is not part of the NHS. They receive limited government funding and do not have access to National Lottery funding. As a charity, they rely on the generosity and kindness of people and businesses across Essex, Hertfordshire and surrounding areas.
It costs in excess of £1,000,000 every month to remain operational, delivering a free first-class pre-hospital emergency medical service for critically ill and injured patients.
